A display is easier to organise when you have thought about the lighting equipment as well as the fireworks. These safety lighters are lighting sticks intended for igniting firework fuses, supplied as three packs of three. Light the end of the stick to provide a wind proof lighter that burns for up to 50 mins.
That gives you nine sticks to include in your preparations. Having a purpose-made lighting item ready at the firing position means you can concentrate on the firework instructions and your retreat route.
The sticks still have a burning tip, so the word “safety” does not remove the need for careful handling. They are an accessory for the adult running the display, not something to hand around to guests or use as a sparkler.
These safety lighters are ideal for a manually fired garden display or a larger private celebration where several individual fireworks will be lit in sequence. Include them when you check your equipment in daylight, alongside the product labels and the items required to secure each firework.
Choose a clear place for handling the lighting sticks, separate from stored fireworks and the audience. If several adults are helping, agree who is responsible for firing. A simple running order and a well-prepared space will make more of a difference than rushing between products once the display starts.
Read the instructions supplied with the lighting sticks and the fireworks. Light a stick as directed and hold it only at the designated unlit end, keeping the hot tip away from clothing, faces and other fireworks.
Approach only the firework you are about to light. Reach its main fuse without leaning over it, ignite as instructed and retreat promptly. Never carry a burning stick in a pocket or leave it unattended. Follow the manufacturer's directions for extinguishing and disposal. Our guide to setting off fireworks explains the wider display setup.
When lighting your fireworks, stay an arm's length away and never lean over the firework. Also, take extra care when you are lighting fanned fireworks. When lighting a fanned firework, do not position yourself on the side with the angled tubes. Light the firework positioned at the front or back.
Keep lighting sticks away from children and flammable materials, including after use while they remain hot. Follow the supplied instructions and read our firework safety guide.
